Fashion Camp Is Coming to the Village

This June, Village Creative is hosting a week-long Fashion Camp for students who want to learn how clothes are made, how patterns work, and what it feels like to create something from start to finish.

Camp runs June 22–26, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 227 East Branch Street in the Village of Arroyo Grande.

Throughout the week, students will learn the basics of sewing, measuring, fabric selection, pattern cutting, garment construction, and styling. The week will end with a student Fashion Show on Sunday, June 28 at 3:00 p.m. at Heritage Square Park.

And yes, the Fashion Show is open to the public.

A Week of Making, Learning, and Finishing

Fashion Camp is designed for students who want to try something creative with their hands.

Some students may already love fashion. Some may have never touched a sewing machine before. That is okay. The week is built to help students learn step by step, from the basics of machine safety to the final details that make a piece feel complete.

On Monday, campers will start with the foundation: sewing machine basics, safety, accurate measuring, pattern sizing, fabric types, and cutting a pattern.

From there, each day focuses on a different part of the design process.

Tuesday is tops. Students can work on projects like shirts, tank tops, halters, vests, camis, and side-tie tops.

Wednesday is bottoms. Campers will explore skirts, shorts, pajama pants, wrap skirts, circle skirts, and other wearable projects.

Thursday is accessories. Students will design and create pieces like bags, belts, and finishing details that help pull a whole look together.

Friday is for finishing. Campers will complete their projects and rehearse for the Fashion Show.

Why Sewing Is Such a Good Teacher

Sewing asks students to slow down.

They have to measure carefully. They have to read instructions. They have to make choices about fabric, fit, and design. They have to solve little problems as they come up, because they always come up.

That is part of what makes it valuable.

A crooked seam is not a failure. It is feedback. A pattern that does not make sense at first becomes something they can learn to understand. A project that feels intimidating at the beginning becomes something they can hold, wear, and say, “I made this.”

That kind of experience matters.

It gives students a real, visible result from their effort. It builds patience. It builds confidence. It helps them see that they are capable of learning skills that once felt out of reach.

The Fashion Show

The week ends with a Fashion Show on Sunday, June 28 at 3:00 p.m. at Heritage Square Park.

Families, friends, and community members are invited to come cheer on the student designers and models. The event is free and open to the public, and guests should bring their own chair or blanket.

All designers and models should arrive at 2:00 p.m. for the final walk-through.

The day will also include an arts and crafts fair, food and beverage vendors, and a Battle of the Bands immediately following the Fashion Show.

Come See What They Made

One of the best parts of a week like this is watching students move from uncertainty to ownership.

At the beginning, they may be learning how to thread a machine or cut fabric without second-guessing every move. By the end, they are preparing to show their work in front of their family and community.

That is a big thing.

Fashion Camp gives students a place to try, learn, finish, and be proud of what they made.
